• Make sure you are in good physical condition.  Cleaning requires strength, endurance, and the ability for your back to withstand the work you will be doing.
• You will want to have good people skills as you will be marketing your business and dealing with customers.
• You will want to have some organization skills of being able to keep track of your expenses and what you are bringing in, and keeping your information together for tax purposes.
• Get bonded and insured.  You will be in people’s homes and there is always the chance of breaking something by accident or being accused of something that goes missing.  It will be important to build trust with your clients.  The more they trust you, the more word-of-mouth referrals you will get from them.
• Do your research.  Find out how much other housecleaning services are charging for your area, and use this as a guide.  Make sure that you do not undercharge as this is not always an attractive thing to customers.  Personally, when I see that someone is much less expensive, I wonder what is wrong with their business.  Decide how you will charge.  Will you charge by the hour, by the room, or by the house?  Personally, I would rather pay someone for the job and not by the hour so that I know what I will be paying without any surprises.
• Gain clientele by getting some good references.  To get references, it is suggested that you clean the homes of friends or acquaintances for free, and then if you do a good job, then you can get them as references.
• Learn the difference between cleaning your own home and doing professional cleaning.  You may not care if your home is spotless, but your customers will expect it when they are paying you.
