Data Entry from Home – What is it?

Data entry is taking data and transcribing it into a computer efficiently and accurately. One keystroke off can result in a messed-up program. Data that gets transcribed is stuff like handwritten information, spreadsheets, or information and codes that, when put together, creates a computer program.

Being able to do data entry offers you the flexibility of having your own business from home. Because you will be spending most of your working hours in front of a computer, do make sure to follow good ergonomics that will keep your body in tip-top shape. Make sure to take mini stretch breaks every 30 minutes or so, and to set up your work station properly so that your wrists are well-supported and your back and neck do not undergo undue strain.

It is important to note that data entry and typing ability are not considered the same thing. I personally can type 75 words per minute, but that is when I’m typing words that make sense. Typing involves putting words together to form sentences. The number of keystrokes I make in an hour are much more when typing words and sentences, but slows down when entering in data. That is normal. This is because data entry involves inputting information that then creates reports and calculations.

When looking into data entry opportunities, be sure to avoid offers whereby you have to pay a fee to get work. This is likely to be a scam.

To get yourself started in the field of data entry, I suggest the following book and software package:

This book will prepare you for jobs in many different fields of data entry, as well as skills needed when entering this field.
You will have the opportunity to practice data entry as you would when hired by someone to do this.
